Google Fonts Downloader for Self-Hosting

Robert Eisele

Google Fonts Downloader builds a self-hosted web-font package directly in the browser. Choose a Google Fonts family, keep only the character sets, styles, and weights a website needs, then download the resulting WOFF2 files with matching CSS.

The exported archive is ready for ordinary static hosting. It contains the selected font files, generated @font-face declarations, an unchanged copy of the font license, a source manifest, and a small local preview page.

Build a Lean Font Package

Search or filter the catalog, select a family, and edit the specimen to test real text. Static mode packages individual weights. When a family offers a variable build, variable mode keeps the complete weight axis in fewer files. Selecting fewer subsets and styles usually reduces both transfer size and rendering work.

The font path controls the URLs written to fonts.css. Use a path relative to the stylesheet, such as ./fonts/, or an absolute site path such as /assets/fonts/. The archive always stores its binary files in a fonts/ directory and also includes preview.css, which works immediately with the bundled example.

The font-display setting is written into every generated face. swap is a practical general default, while optional can avoid a late font replacement on slow connections.

Privacy and Browser Processing

Catalog metadata and selected font files are requested only while using the tool. Package assembly, CSS generation, checksum calculation, and ZIP creation happen locally in the browser. No selected font, preview text, or generated package is uploaded to raw.org.

After deployment, the generated CSS references only the path you configured. A correctly hosted package therefore makes no runtime request to Google Fonts, Fontsource, jsDelivr, or another font CDN.

Licensing

Google Fonts families use open licenses, but the exact license varies by family. Google Fonts Downloader retrieves the original license supplied with the selected Fontsource package and places it unchanged in the archive. Keep that file with redistributed font assets and review its terms before modifying or republishing a typeface.
